Westchester County, incorporated in 1683, is a suburban county located in the northern sector of the New York metropolitan area. It is bordered on the south by New York City, on the east by the State of Connecticut and Long Island Sound, on the north by Putnam County and on the west by the Hudson River. The County has a 1990 census population of 874,866. In the Census 2000, we saw the population grow to 923,459 within a 450 square mile area. The County has a large and varied economic base containing many corporate headquarters, research facilities, manufacturing firms, and well developed trade and service sectors. Approximately one third of employed County residents commute to work outside the County, primarily to New York City.
